A dismayed resident has voiced her concern after noticing her hedgerow was beginning to die back.

Sandra Sims, 53, of Manorfield Road, began to notice the damage to her hedge last winter and again this year found the problem had returned.

A uniform band of the vegetation around the base of the 20ft long hedgerow appears to be dying off - a problem Sandra believes she knows the cause of.

She said: “The problem has been with that little quad bike gritter. It has made the hedge go back.

“What my concern is that it is going to take a while for the hedge to recover.

“Last year it did take a long time to recover.”

The quad bike gritter works to salt the pavements and residential roads to improve conditions for residents in icy conditions.

Sandra said: “I am not against it and I do not want the gritting to stop because it serves a purpose, but my concern is for protecting people’s properties.

“The hedge forms a boundary, it forms privacy and it is a natural habitat.

“If I had to replace the hedge it would cost a lot of money.”

She is calling for an adjustment to be made to the spreading range so as to protect the vegetation along streets while still ensuring the safety of the public in the winter months.

A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which manages winter gritting of the road and path network, confirmed the road is in the council’s network for gritting.

He said the pavement on Manorfield Road had last been salted on Saturday 23 March an

He also said council grounds maintenance staff have not noticed similar damage to roadside vegetation along country lanes.
