Nafferton in Bloom members were surprised last week to find an World War Two bomb shell while digging in their spring flowers.
On Wednesday 10 April Colin Breary, 67, The Maltings, Nafferton had been digging on land opposite Nafferton railway station when his wife, Christine, unearthed the shell.
He said: “It was just a normal digging day. Myself, my wife and three more.
“Somewhere into the early afternoon my wife said ‘What’s this? It looks like a bomb’ so we all laughed and joked about it.
“We picked it up and looked at it and thought it could be a bomb. We were joined later by John Aldred and he suggested we notify the authorities.”
A bomb disposal squad travelled down from Scarborough to dispose of the 2lb shell, and police blocked off Station Road with a rail replacement service taking passengers from Driffield to Bridlington. The device was found to be inert.
Mr Breary, who has lived in Nafferton for two-years, said: “It is a lovely village - I like the peace and quiet of it all - apart from the bombs!”
Resident of the nearby Mill Chase Oliver Smith, 22, said: “Nothing usually happens here to be honest. We found out about it via social media and peered over the fence. It is lucky they found it really, it is always a worry that you might be evacuated.”
Julie Bingley, 45, of Manor Close, Nafferton, said: “It is quite amazing and definitely exciting for Nafferton. It is the last thing you think would happen here.”
Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous spoke of one resident who decided to err on the side of caution and leave the village, with their pet cat, after the bomb squad arrived.
“I saw police there when I came back from work at about half past six and I didn’t think anything of it. But probably about an hour later I noticed a crowd of people in our street and I heard someone on the phone saying we might be evacuated,” he said.
“All of a sudden we heard the siren and the bomb squad came by.”
A crowd of 30 people were said to gather in the street, while social media sites began buzzing with the news of the unexploded device.
