A large chunk of Yorkshire’s “Hambleton Meteorite” is going to auction at Lyon and Turnbull auctioneers on 20 August.
Discovered near Thirsk in 2005 by Rob and Irene Elliott, the Hambleton meteorite is a one-off, and the UK’s only pallasite - a combination of iron and semi-precious gem stones.
More than 80 different meteorites from around the world will be sold when The Robert Elliott Meteorite Collection, the UK’s largest privately owned meteorite collection, goes under the hammer.

Fife based Rob has hunted for meteorites and chased meteorite falls around the world for the last 20 years. He has exchanged and traded meteorites with many of the world’s top museums of natural history, and sold meteorites to collectors in all corners of the Earth.
Often worth many times their weight in gold, meteorites have become highly collectible. Rob lists many well known celebrities amongst his customers, including the late Michael Jackson, Queen guitarist Brian may, Hollywood stars, and many other celebrities from television, stage and screen.
Other highlights in this sale include a chunk of the Russian meteorite which caused mayhem in Chelyabinsk, Russia last February, injuring thousands of people, a slice of the incredibly rare High Possil meteorite which fell near Glasgow in 1804, and two chunks of the Barwell meteorite from Leicestershire, which fell on Christmas Eve 1965, now affectionately known as “The Christmas Meteorite”.
Plus a whole bunch of other old.....very, very old space rocks.
