Driffield and Yorkshire rugby player Ryan Murray has been offered the opportunity of a lifetime after being invited to train with professional junior rugby academy Natal Sharks U19s in South Africa for eight weeks.
Ryan, who attends Bishop Burton College, and also plays for Driffield’s senior side, said: “This is the highest standard of rugby I will have played, and in my eyes could really change the future of my rugby if all goes well.”
Having attended Driffield School and played rugby for Driffield since the age of six, this is a real opportunity for Ryan, but he needs help with funding for the trip. He added: “This is a very rare opportunity which I have worked on incredibly hard for a long time. However the problem is the trip is rather expensive and will cost in the region of £3,000.
“I am currently undergoing various methods of fund-raising including selling old unwanted things, but I could still do with all the financial help I can get.
“If I raise the sufficient amount to go I believe it will not only benefit me but also look good for the local community to represent Driffield halfway across the world.
“Furthermore I think it could enable possible connections for overseas transfers between not only Bishop Burton College, but also Driffield rugby club.”
This will top what has been an excellent season for the youngster, and Ryan said: “This season I was selected to represent Yorkshire and I hope to better that next year with a hopeful North England selection. In addition to this, since I turned 17, I have also started playing for the Driffield men’s team this year, and have played several first games, however I have often been busy with Yorkshire fixtures.”
As well as Ryan selling old unwanted items, he also has several fund raisers lined up, such as a craft fair, raffle and tombola which he thanks the Driffield community for their donations. On top of this his brother, Rob of RM Personal Training, is planning a boot camp training session with all funds dedicated to the trip.
The mega raffle, tombola and craft stalls will be held at Driffield Methodist schoolroom on Saturday, April 5 from 1pm to 3.30pm.
Admission is 50p and includes tea and coffee.
Last week Driffield Town Council donated £200 towards the trip.
