John Burchett Cup Quarter Final

Driffield Town caused a massive upset against their higher league rivals in an enthralling cup quarter final by progressing into the semi finals at their expense.

Driff Town had just a bare 11 and manager Steve Parker found himself dusting off the cobwebs to lace up his boots and slot into centre half alongside Thompson, Wilson and Colquhoun.

Town started the game determined to make their mark on it with some nice one-touch passing and found themselves take a 20 minute lead. Captain Addinall evaded the Stirling defence and slotted past the keeper.

Nath Parker, Brown, Jackson and Billy were working hard and looked to link up with Mills when they could but it was Stirling who found the next goal, equalising with a fine header leaving Ollie in the Town goal with no chance.

Within five minutes Stirling took the lead, a mis-hit shot hitting Colquhoun and wrong footing Ollie in the Town goal.

Into the seco2nd half and Town got amongst the Stirling players, fighting for every ball and pressing them quickly and on 60 minutes were level. Brown’s delicious cross found Nath who scored a wonderful header into the far top corner.

Town now had the bit between their teeth and stunned their premier league rivals by scoring twice more in five minutes. The first a wonderful 20-yard volley flying into the Stirling net from Mills and then quickly followed up with his second, tucking away a cross from Jackson.

Town were unlucky not to inflict even more punishment on Stirling, with Colquhoun driving just wide and Nath looking to be upended in the box but no penalty awarded.

Wilson, Addinall, Thompson and Steve Parker were winning continous challenges and were unlucky to see Stirling grab a lucky third two minutes from time when the striker’s shot hit the outstretched boot of Thompson to deflect past Ollie but it was not enough to derail the Driff Town treble challenge as they go through to the semi finals.

Manager Steve Parker buzzed afterwards: “I couldn’t be prouder of the lads.

“We came up against a decent team from a higher league and beat them well and with only the bare 11.

“The character and attitude of my lads was brilliant and our season keeps getting better.”

Man Of Match: Nathan Parker – stand out performance within an excellent team performance.
