The London Marathon was held last Sunday, and here are details of some of the locals who took part.
A winter of marathon training concluded on Sunday for many, including two Yorkshire Wolds Runners who took part in the Virgin London Marathon. Julie Weatherill and Kerry Garner joined over 30,000 other runners to take part in this world famous race and raise money for charity.
Julie was raising money for the Meningitis Now and Kerry for Clic Sargent.
Although not ideal for running a marathon, the bright sunny skies and warm temperatures were the perfect conditions for the spectators who were out in their thousands lining every step of the course offering support, encouragement, jelly babies and beer.
Dotted amongst the sea of spectators were many Hull City fans watching the race before heading to Wembley.
For Julie, this was her fifth marathon but her first time of experiencing the party-like atmosphere that the London Marathon is renowned for.
She completed the run in an impressive 04:46:30.
Sunday marked Kerry’s sixth London Marathon and ninth marathon overall. She completed the course in 05:09:08.
Also taking part were John Hakner and his wife Cat. John finished in 3:56:54 and Cat in 4:16:18.
Cat said: “We are massively chuffed to bits, it was magic.
“Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes and messages of good luck.”
Driffield postman Barrie Kitching, 59, finished in 4hours 13mins before heading to Wembley to watch Hull City make it to the FA Cup final after beating Sheffield United 5-3.
Barrie said: “It was too hot and a struggle. After running the Rome Marathon three weeks ago I won’t be rushing to do two so close again.”
Danny Cousins also ran before heading to Wembley.
Danny, who finished with a superb time of 3:11:48 said: “I was hoping for under 3:30 so I am overjoyed with my time.
“It was my first marathon, and I hadn’t run further than a half marathon in training, so initially worried about hitting the so called “wall” at 20 miles however I pulled through and kept going.
“I must admit that the crowd were a massive help - my sister and her husband were among the spectators as was my girlfriend and her sister - I saw them at Mile 21 at which point I was very much in the ‘zone’.
“I jumped straight onto the tube after I had finished and headed to Wembley still sporting my running gear and medal.
“A female Hull City fan in the ground, who I had never met before, gave me £20 having seen the Macmillan vest I was wearing and my medal.
“With Hull winning it was a dream day for me - one that I can saviour for many years.
“Emotional day in some respects as I remembered why I was running the marathon. Also, with my late Dad being a Hull City fan for 40 years the day was made extra special.
“I am now in recovery and planning my next competitive races.”
