rail services

Extra cost worth the hassle-free train trip

In response to Phillip Crossland’s letter about possible cuts to local rail services, as someone who has spent over the last quarter of a century driving everywhere, I never really envisaged I’d become an advocate for local rail services.

But with the seemingly increasing amount of road traffic and lack of patience and road manners of some drivers nowadays, and the often difficult task of finding reasonably priced carparks, I’ve now become a convert to taking the train. I do endeavour to support local shops in Bridlington and Driffield for the majority of my purchases.

However now and again it’s great to be able to hop aboard a train and be able to relax and not have to worry about roadworks and parking etc, and arrive in the centre of Hull 30 minutes later.

Yesterday for the first time I took advantage of catching a direct train to Meadowhall shopping centre, Sheffield, I’m sure it is slightly more costly then driving but totally hassle free, well worth that extra pound or two, compared to driving.

This service was something I was totally unaware about until a friend mentioned it a few weeks ago. I in turn mentioned it to another friend who lives in Driffield that I was going, they were very interested and thought it was a service they would like to use as well.

I’m not sure whether I go around with my eyes closed or whether the only adverts we see for taking the train are to Edinburgh or London!

Perhaps some of the money raised by increasing fares could actually be used to advertise local rail services better, which will hopefully increase passenger numbers, and reduce the need to cut services.

My hope for the future is that rather then seeing a cut in local rail services, I will actually be able to walk to Lowthorpe and catch the train there, at the station which last operated in January 1970, perhaps then it would really be “the age of the train!”

Children raise £300 for sensory garden work

Above is a photo of some of the work the Kingsmill Warriors (lifestyle team) have done on the garden at Gembling school, to make it into a sensory garden for the Kings Mill School nursery.

They have worked really hard and put in about 60 hours altogether, and have spent over £300 that they have raised over the holidays.

I would also like to thank all the generous people of Driffield who have supported their raffle, teddy tombola and sponsored events.

Thanks again.
