East Yorkshire MP and classic car enthusiast Sir Greg Knight has suggested a scenic drive around the Wolds as his favourite thing to do in the East Riding.

“There are many options for a delightful car run through East Yorkshire, so picking one particular route above others is almost impossible. Bridlington has a wonderful history.

“The famous film actor AE Matthews, who appeared alongside Gregory Peck in the film The Million Pound Bank Note was born here in a small cottage, now demolished. Choose AE Matthews’ birthplace as your starting point – it is now the B&Q car park.

“Pass Bridlington Hospital and turn right, then left onto Woldgate, which is an old Roman highway. This becomes clear when you see how straight it is. Take care as it is used by horse riders and cyclists. Initially, Woldgate runs through a shaded wooded area, but then it opens out, giving a panoramic view towards Nafferton and Driffield.

“Continue to Kilham, which has a Grade One-listed Anglican church and is well worth a visit. Afterwards, if you have any passengers who need retail therapy, go to Driffield, where you can enjoy the delights of the shops in the town. Travelling west on the A166 and turn right onto the B1252 for a stop at Sledmere House and café.

“Afterwards, head towards Fimber, passing the fledgling Yorkshire Wolds Railway, and rejoin the A166, turning at Garrowby Hill towards Great Givendale, and on to Millington, which is a delightful and charming village at the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds, beloved by local artist David Hockney.

“Finally, finish your drive at Pocklington, where an array of shops, restaurants and pubs await.

“ Also, check out the Pocklington Arts Centre - they have extremely good live entertainment.

“Remember, this is not a race: it is a relaxing and picturesque route for you to enjoy.”
