A funeral service was held at the East Riding Crematorium on Thursday 18th October for Mrs Margaret Fraser of Riverhead Hall Nursing Home (formerly of Nafferton).
The service was conducted by the Rev Jacki Tonkin and the organist was Mr Peter Maw.
Judy was born on 14th June, 1920 in East Sussex. She was the second daughter of Gerald and Daisy Baker. Her sister Dinah when asked what the baby should be called she opted for Judy after the cow they had called Judy and this name stayed with her all her life.
Being born into a farming family she was extremely proud to achieve a science degree at university, following a diploma in dairying when it was not the norm for women. She always regretted missing out on her graduation ceremony as World War 2 intervened.
A bacteriologist specialising in dairying she was to meet Hector at agricultural college and they married in 1946.
They lived at Stanhope Farm in the Tweed Valley throughout the 1950’s where both of their children attended local schools. They moved from Scotland in early 1962, first briefly to Gloucestershire and then to the East Riding. In 1967 they purchased Red House in Nafferton, a then derelict property, that Judy and Hector literally rebuilt and turned into the family home, and jointly also developed the farming enterprise there.
Judy loved doing crosswords, sewing, knitting, walking and gardening and was an accomplished cook. In later life she found that she enjoyed and was very good at painting. She had a deep love for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to travel and visited Tasmania, Canada,Australia and New Zealand and enjoyed cruising on the West Coast of Scotland.. She also enjoyed family history and traced her family tree back to the 1600’s.
She will be greatly missed.
