One of the most spectacular walks in the East Riding is the trip between North Landing and South Landing at Flamborough.
The area has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest and its seabird colonies mark it as a Special Protection Area.
The impressive white chalk cliffs have featured on the BBC TV show Coast and if you arrive when the tide is out you can explore the caves which have been created by the sea and where smugglers use to hide contraband from the tax man.
However, it is essential to be aware of the tides, as many visitors have been caught out and cut off.
South Landing was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 2002 in recognition of its wildlife value and its importance to the local community.
It is also home to Flamborough RNLI, which opens its boathouse during the summer months, and has a souvenir shop, and there is a short nature walk near to the car park at South Landing which is popular with families.
The nature trail winds its way along a wooded valley that is a mecca for migrating birds in spring and autumn. Along the cliff tops, there are panoramic sea views due south, an unusual experience on the Yorkshire coast.
The nature trail is a great place for wild flowers, with over 350 species recorded here.
From the South Landing, paths run along the cliff edge, and offer a haven of peace and quiet for walkers.
The lighthouse soon comes into view and there is a restaurant there which offers a chance to stop for refreshments.
The clifftop path then takes walkers past Flamborough Head Golf Club up to the final destination at North Landing and the beach there is a beautiful expanse of sand, white pebbles and rock pools. It is a perfect spot for a family day out where you can have a picnic.
