Weather forecasts featuring snow, ice and frost means cricket is the last thing on most people’s minds.
But local clubs are already turning their attention to finding new players for the 2015 season, after what proved to be a disjointed 2014 campaign for many teams.
Teams folded during the season, others called off matches because of a lack of players and frustration grew as officials wondered how they could get players to commit.
Sewerby CC have already started their recruitment campaign and want to hear from local players who want to be part of their weekend or midweek teams.
Relegation from the York Senior League Premier DIvision means the club is braced for the departure of some of its first team players but it is hoping its picturesque clifftop setting will help to attract replacements.
Club official Ken Rennoldson said: “Sewerby has cricketing facilities which are among the best in Yorkshire. This is evidenced in the recent merit tables produced by the York and District Senior Cricket League which places the club overall fifth out of the 62 clubs surveyed.
“Playing and practice facilities are of a very high standard and the relatively newly-built pavilion boasts changing rooms second to none, together with showers, toilets, tea room and scorebox.
“The club is well-financed with an excellent infrastructure, comprising dedicated officers, who carry out the many and varied secretarial tasks needed to run an efficient club, together with a faithful and committed team of volunteers, which manages pavilion maintenance and ground and pitch preparation.
“It is the intention to encourage people to come and play cricket at our cliff-top ground where, on some occasions there are probably more spectators than at midweek county matches.
“On a warm summer’s day, it is a delight to witness and better still to take part in a cricket match being played in front of the Georgian splendour of Sewerby Hall coupled with amazing, panoramic views over Bridlington Bay.
“There is scope for players of all abilities at Sewerby and youngsters from the age of 10 years.
“The annual subscription for all players, junior and senior is a modest £15 and for seniors, a league match fee of £5 is levied, to cover teas and match officials’ expenses.”
