A number of villages in the Driffield area will be on the route of the first Tour de Yorkshire, it was announced yesterday.

The top-class cycle race winds its way though the Wolds on the second day of the inaugural event, which will be held on 1, 2 and 3 May this year.

Bainton, Wetwang and Lund will host part of the race, run by Welcome to Yorkshire and Amaury Sport Organisation, when thousands of spectators will line up to see the top professional cyclists compete in the Sprint Stages.

On Saturday 2 May, the exciting Sprint Stage will start at Selby Abbey travelling across various areas of The Wolds, including Market Weighton, Stamford Bridge, North Newbald, Bainton, Wetwang and Lund before finishing in York.

The event starts in Bridlington on 1 May, with the cyclists following the Heritage Coast, taking in the North Yorkshire Moors, and finishing in Scarborough.

The third day starts in Wakefield and ends in Leeds.
