There was a fantastic atmosphere on the start line as spectators arrived several hours before the Tour de Yorkshire got underway.

Michael Wood, East Riding town crier, who was born in Bridlington, said: “I’m here to warm the crowds up, not that they need warming up. As long as you have the weather, everything else will take care of itself.

“For years, I have thought that Bridlington deserved better and now it is getting better.

“And anything that takes people’s minds off the election has got to be a good thing.”

Among the first in the queue were Joe and Angela Reissmann and Peter and Yvonne Bellwood from Sykehouse, which is between Goole and Doncaster. They had stayed at Skirlington overnight and got up at 5.30am to ensure they had a good vantage point at the start line.

Angela said: “I think Gary Verity should get a knighthood for this, it has been done fantastically.

“Bridlington has done fantastically and there is a great atmosphere.”
