At 11am on 27 March, five staff and 37 students embarked on a 27 hour journey across Europe to the picturesque town of Bormio, high in the Italian Alps, in search of snow.

The journey was spent laughing, watching DVD’s, eating copious amounts of sweets and of course sleeping. At 2-00pm the following day the group arrived at the hotel in Bormio and once the bus was unloaded, headed off in search of Italy’s finest pizza. After refuelling with what can only be described as the best pizza in the world, they went to get their skis and boots fitted ready for skiing on Sunday. The rest of the evening was spent unpacking in the hotel, having tea and getting an early night ready for the next day.

The group awoke refreshed and after a hearty breakfast headed for the slopes. For some this was to be their first experience of being on a mountain, skis and snow and so inevitably there were a few falls. The more experienced skiers headed out with their instructor to explore all the runs the mountain had to offer.

The next five days were spent skiing two hours each morning, followed by a delicious lunch and then three hours skiing in the afternoon. The weather was varied with some days snowing heavily and visibility being poor and others being glorious sunshine.

The group took part in numerous après ski activities including a general knowledge quiz and a presentation evening; however the highlight of the trip was a night at the local disco. The staff and students spent two and half hours dancing the night away and throwing some shapes on the dance floor.

As always the students on the trip represented Driffield School in the best possible manner. All were extremely polite and well behaved throughout the trip and all were a true credit to their school and themselves, so much so the hotel and bus drivers both commented that “Driffield School was the best bunch of students they had ever come across”.

As trip leader I would like to express my sincere thanks to the four members of staff that made the trip possible – Mrs R Backhouse, Mrs S Dean, Mr J Dean and Mrs S Ramsay. The trip was a huge success and everyone had a fantastic time, so much so next year’s trip is already filling up.
