A funeral service was held at All Saints’ Church, Nafferton on Friday October 16, for Mr John William (Jack) Taylor, of Ward Lea, Nafferton, who died suddenly on Sunday September 27. He was aged 85 years.

The service was conducted by the Rev John Tallant and the organist was Mr Steven Westaway.

Jack was born in Burstwick, near Hull, on April 8, 1930, to William Taylor, a general carrier and Mary Elizabeth Taylor, a housewife and dressmaker.

Jack’s dad worked as a ploughman with horses and the horse brasses won by his dad in ploughing competions were prized by Jack and displayed with pride.

Jack attended school in Burstwick and later Bilton school where he met his future wife Joan Brown. They enjoyed activities at Bilton Youth Club and attending village hall dances. Jack left school at 14 to start work locally as a farmworker and later a tractor driver – acquiring a motorcycle to commute to work.

After Jack and Joan married at Bilton Church on July 24, 1954, they stayed with his mother in Bilton until Jack took a job at Painslack Farm (between Huggate and Wetwang). The family then moved to Freshlands and later Haywold Farm near North Dalton.

Jack rapidly became a popular and respected employee, rising to become farm foreman on the 2,000 acre estate (now part of JSR estate), a post which he enjoyed for 40 years until retiring to Nafferton in 1995.

His hobbies included Hull Speedway and being a lifelong supporter of Hull City Football Club. Jack and Joan also enjoyed dancing and tenpin bowling, and occasional trips to Canada to visit Jack’s brother in law and sister in laws extended families.

In retirement he also enjoyed helping neighbours with gardening tasks, DIY and model making in his ‘Aladdins Cave’ shed for his grandchildren.
