A funeral service was held at the East Riding Crematorium, Octon on Thursday 24 March for Mr Henry Frederick Fowler of Driffield who died peacefully in Castle Hill Hospital on Sunday 13 March. He was 88 years old.

The service was conducted by the Rev Andrew Ison and the organist was Mr Steven Westaway.

Henry was born in Caterham, Surrey on 3 September 1927 to William and Doris Fowler.

He had two brothers and three sisters, he was the second youngest. The family lived in Whyteleafe in Surrey and he attended Caterham Central Secondary School. Henry left school at 14 years old where he joined a building and civil engineering company as an apprentice plant fitter, working on large machinery such as excavators and bulldozers.

During the war the company he worked for had the responsibility for maintaining the runways at the three RAF fighter stations. Henry worked at Kenley, Biggin Hill and Croydon all of which covered the London approaches. The company also made parts for the RAF Airborne Lifeboat and the Mulberry Harbour of D-Day fame.

At 18 years old, after the end of the war, Henry was called up to join the Navy and served as an aircraft fitter. After the initial training at an RAF station in South Wales, he was sent to serve in Malta on a Royal Naval Air Station for 18 months reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

Following on after his service he returned and continued his training as a plant fitter with his old company where he was transferred to Redcar, where the construction of Wilton ICI works was taking place.

In 1953 the great East Coast flood occurred where the North Sea breached the sea wall, so Henry moved to Felixstowe to help repair part of this and from there he moved to the company’s repair and holding depot based at Brightlingsea’s shipyard.

Henry married Marjorie Metzner in 1954 at All Saints’ Parish Church in Driffield, following which they moved to Brightlingsea to live.

Later they moved to Driffield to be near Marjorie’s mother, and Henry joined Richardson’s Engineers working in the tractor division, leaving to join Dewhirst’s to look after machine repairs.

He worked hard and became the factory manager, director and then managing director. He oversaw the company’s expansion in the Driffield area, also opening factories at Little Driffield, Hull, Bridlington and Barton.

Henry and Marjorie had three children, Michael, Janet and Paul, they also had two daughters in law Lesley and Christine and four grandchildren Stephen, Thomas, Joshua and Lauren. Sadly Marjorie died in 1993.

Henry always liked travelling and he enjoyed taking holidays with his family. He travelled to many countries and visited friends and relatives in Spain, New Zealand and Australia.

Henry loved working in his garden, he enjoyed walking and his favourite pastime was playing golf, he was a member of the Driffield Golf Club for over 40 years and made many friends there.

Henry was a very kind and extremely generous person, especially to all his family and friends. He had lived on his own for 22 years after his beloved Marjorie passed away, however he spent his time with family and friends whenever he could and lived his life to the full, creating many wonderful and happy memories. He will be greatly missed.
