Letters - Great experience at Driffield site

It seems a sad reflection on today’s society when we are “amazed” at the kindness of others, as Peter Hyde was when visiting the recycling site. (Letter 12/5/16)

Having visited the site myself twice this year though I can echo his experience.

It makes it a pleasure when you are met with enthusiasm even though you are only taking them rubbish.

Too often nowadays there is no human around at all and you are expected to manage with signs and machines.

An agreeable monthly trip of mine used to be to West Garth to pay Council Tax.

Now I have to do battle with a slightly malevolent looking machine in the library.

Having fed it £20 notes you feel as though you ought to be getting a small prize in return!

Of course the remaining staff there are helpful enough, but with no proper counter or desk it is like encroaching on their work space.

You feel you must apologise, complete your business as soon as possible, and depart.

I realise the whole idea is to get us all onto Direct Debits instead, but older folks like an excuse to get out and about while still able.
