East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight is calling on the Government to increase the amount of British food purchased by the public sector.
Sir Greg asked Elizabeth Truss MP, the Secretary of State for Rural Affairs, what progress had been made across the Government in requiring the purchase of British food or food that meets the same high standards.
Responding to Sir Greg’s question, Ms Truss has agreed to take further action to ensure more British food is purchased in Government-owned canteens, restaurants and cafeterias.
The minster revealed that the Ministry of Justice has launched a tender for supplying food to our prisons worth £500 million and the good news is that more food will be sourced from the UK, including all milk supplies.
Sir Greg said: “The Government spends billions on food every year and by increasing the amount of high-quality British food on the menu in our hospitals, prisons and school cafeterias, everyone benefits, but especially farmers, including those in East Yorkshire.”
