Driffield School’s Year Seven girls are the under-13 Yorkshire cricket champions.
The youngsters will now go on to represent the county in the Chance To Compete North of England finals in Barnsley next month after an exceptional day of cricket at York CC.
Driffield went into the competition as East Yorkshire champions and showed their qualities against the winners from South, West and North Yorkshire.
The team came up against national indoor finalists MacMillan Academy from Middlesbrough in the first game, but they were not daunted by the quality of the opposition.
After a tight bowling display, they restricted the opponents to 56 runs after the eight overs.
A steady but sensible batting display from openers Rosie O’Rourke and Brooke Potter, with some big hitting from Abi Howland, took Driffield close to the target and this was finished off by Tess Kirven and Lilly Sheriff for a four-wicket win.
In the second game, excellent bowling again restricted Kettlethorpe High School from Wakefield to 35 all out. Eve Naylor and Mia Duggan bowled particularly well in this match.
It was Holly Snaith and O’Rourke who started brightly with the batting to take the team close to an easy six-wicket win.
The result created a winner-takes-all final group game with Winterhill School from Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
The opposition opening pair had retired every game so far with sixes galore and this continued in the final match with both girls retiring, but great captaincy from Kirven and team tactics from everyone kept the remaining batters to singles and dot balls and they finished on 64 after seven overs.
A brilliant batting display from O’Rourke, Potter, Howland and Kirven left Driffield to requiring six runs off the last over and they hit the winning runs with three balls to spare.
