A group of National Lottery winners, including some from the Driffield area, have helped transform gardens and play areas at Wentworth Castle and Gardens in Barnsley.

The winners also planted a memorial tree outside the garden’s landmark conservatory to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot Capability Brown.

Lottery winners, including Elaine and Rob Leason, Sue and Peter Brusby, and Sue and Norman Harris have been helping to shape the celebrations at Wentworth.

And as well as gardening, the multi-millionaire team from across Yorkshire and the North East have been sprucing up the children’s play area and giving it a fresh coat of paint ready for this summer’s visitors.

Claire Herring, director at Wentworth Castle, said: “We were absolutely delighted to welcome all of the lottery winners to Wentworth, particularly in this very important year for the British countryside.

“We are so grateful for everything they have done. They have been a very enthusiastic workforce and were all prepared to muck-in and get their hands dirty!

“Thousands of visitors come to Wentworth every year and we are expecting our visitor numbers to hit record levels this year as we mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot Capability Brown. It’s a very exciting time.”

The voluntary day at Wentworth Castle and Gardens is just one of a number of voluntary projects which National Lottery winners get involved in across the country.

The winners’ day of voluntary work came as the nation celebrates the life and achievements of Lancelot Capability Brown – the man responsible for shaping the British countryside.
