A 14-year-old from Hutton Cranswick is setting the show jumping world alight – despite being severely deaf in both ears.

Lauren Wilmost has to compete against able-bodied riders and has to go by the clock as she cannot hear the bell.

She has to have lessons with a radio aid which has been the lifeline.

The youngster has just returned from jumping at Bolesworth International where she won the two pony classes on her own produced 148cm ponies.

On the Saturday she won on Crumpaun lad then took second on Keltic Mystery. She followed this up on Sunday by taking first on Keltic mystery and third on Crumpaun lad, being awarded her prize by the Rev Stuart Grant from Lockinton.

She went to Bishop Burton and won the novice with crumpaun lad and then won the discovery on Keltic mystery. The ponies had never won anything before Lauren got them last year.

Mum Tracey Wilmot said: “Lauren works very hard with her horse riding every day and doing all the work herself.

“She is very dedicated to her job and very competitive, she has her double clears for this year in novice and discovery and also next years so she can do second rounds for the national final.”

She has a new sponsor this year – Just Jumps of Wetherby, which provides her with a jackets and rugs.

She is trained by Ernest Dillion and Joe Whitaker, and is in the Yorkshire BS junior academy.

She has qualified for the scope final in August on both ponies,

“We are very proud parents and feel she is a good advert for deaf children around,” added Tracey.
