Full steam ahead at rally

Final preparations are underway as the popular Driffield Steam and Vintage Rally returns to town this weekend.

The event, organised by the East Riding Engine Club at the Showground, always attracts a spectacular line-up of vehicles powered by steam, and internal combustion engines and for the first time in the UK, a unique electric car more than 100 years old will be making its debut.

With the electric car now being seen as the way forward for “greener” personal transport, it might come as news to many people that electric cars have actually been around since the 1880s.

One early car, dating from 1907, is the unique Victor High Wheel Electric Runabout which has recently been acquired by an Engine Club member. This car was the only one of its type made and has been imported from the USA.

It is an almost silent runner and is therefore fitted with a large bell to warn others of its approach.

A highlight of the rally weekend for many is the Saturday night road run into Driffield town centre.

This is probably the busiest night in the town centre’s calendar when the vintage vehicles parade into the town where they stay for an hour or so, allowing the public to view the steam engines, vintage tractors, cars and commercial vehicles up close and to mingle among them.

During this free show a collection is undertaken for Yorkshire Cancer Research, which last year raised just under £3,000.
