A funeral service was held at the East Riding Crematorium on Wednesday, 24 August, for Mrs Margaret Mary Hewitt who died on 5 August. She was aged 89 years.

The service was conducted by the Rev Jacki Tonkin and the organist was Steven Westaway.

Mary was born in Goole on 10 January, 1927. She was the youngest in the family with five older brothers. She attended Goole Grammar School where she met her future husband Russell Hewitt.

After leaving school she went to study short hand and typing and went to work for British Rail. Mary and Russell married in December, 1949. They went on to have two children Lindsay and John. Russell’s work saw them move to Bath, and later to return to Yorkshire, first to Thorne and later to Airmyn where they enjoyed life breeding boxer dogs and keeping chickens and rabbits. Mary’s extended family visited often and there are fond memories of games on the huge lawn. They later moved to Goole after the death of Russell’s father and then to Thorntree Lane with Russell’s mum and auntie, ever the carer Mary supported them for the remainder of their days.

A short time working for Pearl Assurance preceded the role in Goole Health Centre, cycling each day to work as a Doctor’s secretary and that was to be her role until she retired. On retiring Mary and Russell acquired a plot of land in Howden and started building their retirement bungalow where they enjoyed tending their smallholding, growing fruit and veggies and keeping rabbits once again. Mary loved her flower garden and she was also a great cook with her stew and dumplings a firm favourite.

Mary and Russell spent many happy hours and holidays with their dear friends Anne and Dennis Hall. Spain and the Islands were a favourite destination and Mary took great joy in seeing the Andalucia horses.

Sadly Russell died in 1998 and then her dear son John in 2010.

Family was such a large part of Mary’s life and she was immensely proud of her grandchildren – Christopher, Andrew, Daniel, Alice, Lucy and Oliver and she delighted in her role as a great grandma to Daniel John, Andrew Jack and Lauren Elizabeth.

She will be greatly missed by her family.
