A rare image by a celebrated Yorkshire artist currently owned by a client of William Gibbons Fine Art is set to go before a famous Irish auction house.

The chalk and pencil portrait of Sir Roger Casement, an important figure in Irish history, has been submitted for auction at Adams in Dublin on Tuesday 30 April.

Sir Roger Casement, who sought help in the Irish Rebellion from Germany and was later hanged for treason in Pentonville Prison in 1916, and is thought to sell for £700.

Drawn by the Yorkshire artist Sir William Rothenstein, the picture is a rare find and will go before a specialist auction focussed on 800-years of Irish military history.

Robin Small, of William Gibbons Fine Art and who lives in Nafferton, said: “Rothenstein was very famous for his chalk work. Sir Roger Casement was a massive Irish national hero.

“It is very exciting that this is going to auction, as there are not many portraits of him - it is one of the last to be painted.

“The current owner didn’t know at first what they had, we advised putting it up for auction.

“Placing a picture with the right people is incredibly important at the right auction and the right time.”
