Glorious sunshine heralded in this year’s Wetwang Scarecrow Festival last Saturday.

Families, visitors and scarecrow judges descended upon the usually sleepy village on Saturday 25 May to take in the creative efforts of residents, businesses and surrounding communities.

Melanie Moss, chairman of Wetwang Village Hall Committee, said: “The weather has been brilliant in Wetwang for the festival so far. People are turning out to support it, we are raising lots of funds for the village hall because we are a registered charity with no external funding so every little helps.”

The entries were scored by judges Alex Cann of Stray FM and Yorkshire Coast Radio, Driffield’s Town Crier Brian Fairfield, Doug Stewart of BBC Radio Humberside and Hannah Worrall from the Driffield Times & Post.

The judges selected winning entries from a range of categories, encompassing the two themes of ‘other’ and ‘nursery rhymes’.

In the children’s category for nursery rhymes first place was awarded to Tom Hope’s entry called I think I’ll go and eat worms, Second place was Henry Bannaghan’s Incy Wincy Spider and third was the Three Little Pigs and the Bad Wolf by Sophie and Liam Hall.

The adult nursery rhymes category was won by Andrea Richardson’s gruesome interpretation of the Three Blind Mice. Second was Jane Marwood’s Incy Wincy Spider, and third was Doctor Foster by C Albinger.

In the adult category for other, Dave Sutton’s Darby and Joan scooped the top spot. Second was Billy by Bill and Dot Buckle, and Bob the Biker came in third, by Claire and Andy.

The businesses entries for other saw Victoria Pedalton, by the Victoria Inn take the first place. Second was Tea Brake by Wetwang Pine and Oak, and third place went to Finding Nemo by Harpers Fish and Chip Shop.

The group nursery rhyme efforts were crowned by Jasmine, Joshua and Jordan Young’s entry Hey Diddle Diddle. Little Miss Muffet by Wetwang Pre-School came in second and The Church and Steeple by St Nicholas Church were third place. The group other category was championed by the Lewis Family’s The Wonderful World of Disney.

Visiting groups nursery rhyme category was won by Hey Diddle Diddle from the 2nd Scarborough Rangers. Three Blind Mice by Pocklington Children’s Centre came second and Dr Foster by Derek and Sandra Harper came in third.

The visiting other category saw Five Senses’ entry of Dr Who take the top spot. Second went to Belle and Friends of Preston Primary School and the Wise Owl by Driffield Infants School winning the third place.

The festival continues until Sunday 2 June when the winners voted for by the public will be announced by Chris Johnson of Viking FM and Paddy Billington of Yorkshire Coast Radio.
