Driffield town council is to consider giving financial aid to a youth group for disabled children which is facing closure.

The Driffield Inclusive Saturday Club has warned that it will struggle once funding is withdrawn in July by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council family support service.

Club officials have said it will cost them £9,000 a year to run the club and have been advised that DISC should become a “voluntary not for profit” organisation.

They have approached the town council for help.

Parents Catherine Louth, Nicholas Watts and Joanne Murfin said: “We are several other parents of disable children are currently working with East Riding Voluntary Action Services to set up DISC as a charity or registered youth group.

“This is at an early stage but we need finance as soon as possible to ensure that the group continues after July.”

Coun Steve Poessl urged the town council to give DISC financial aid to kick start their change in status.

“52 young people have registered with this club, which is based in Driffield” he said.

Withdrawal of ERYC funding meant the club was facing closure.

“They are going for charity status to try and keep it going themselves but in the meantime they require revenue.”

The club uses trained staff to cater for the needs of the disabled children and Coun Poessl said: “I believe that without this group there would be a lot of people who would be disadvantaged, those with disabilities of all kinds, not just physically but mentally as well. They would have nowhere to go.

“We have always said in this council that there is not enough for the youth of the town.

“I would like to keep them going until they have the opportunity to raise their own funds and stand on their own two feet.”

Coun Joyce Fletcher said: “I am all in favour of helping in any way we can but I also we think we should contact the East Riding and tell them what we think of them. They cannot just stop funding things like this - it is just so important.”

Coun Matt Rogers: “I agree with Joyce, is it really our job to be funding this? But I have attended this group a few years ago at Driffield School and it is an absolutely fantastic group. I think as a town council we need to give our support and help to keep this group running.

“I do thing we also need to let the East Riding know it isn’t up to us to fund it. Having said that, if we need to fund it for a little while then so be it.”

Coun Kevin Stack said: “I think this could be an exception to the rule to help these people to keep this Saturday morning group going.”

The town council passed a resolution look at costings at a future meeting with a view to helping DISC.
