A moving new play full of comedy and dark humour comes to Union Mash Up on Prince’s Avenue, Hull, next week.

Aunty’s Waxworks, which runs from Weds 25 to Sat 28 June, is by local playwright Joanna Morris, and tells the story of a close-knit family at odds with each other – all because of ‘Aunty’s Waxworks’.

While it is has characters you will immediately recognise, all of the action revolves around one, ‘Aunty’, who is lovingly bizarre, in her world of wealthy relatives, cats, seagulls and her intriguing waxworks.

Morris, who is also directing the play, said: “Basically, the family gang up on her until her niece, Sarah, starts to see that even though her aunt is unconventional her approach to life is actually far healthier, and more real, true and fulfilling, than their own.

“It’s written from the heart, and the cast have been fantastic in bringing out and portraying what I’ve written.”

Set in a seaside town in northern England, Aunty’s Waxworks is the latest production by Hull and East Yorkshire theatre group The Dale Theatre Company. Union Mash Up is handily located at 24 Prince’s Avenue, right next to Pave, and recently hosted a series of successful comedy nights by Lucy Beaumont. Doors open at 7pm and shows start at 7.30pm. Tickets are £6 (£5 conc) in advance from 078150 45189 or on the night, or from Alive with Art, the new shop front gallery at 24 Prince’s Avenue.
