Driffield Junior School suffered heartache for the third year running in the Drax Cup finals held at Headingley Cricket Ground last Wednesday.

The team lost to the eventual champions Shawlands Primary from Barnsley in a tense semi-final by a single run (150-149) which was decided on the last ball.

In the play-off for third and fourth place Driffield were beaten by 14 runs (148-134) against Low Ash Primary from Shipley, near Bradford.

Shawlands were crowned 2014 Drax Cup champions with victory over Lingfield Primary from Marton, near Middlesbrough (179-136). Lingfield won their semi-final with Low Ash 91-138.

Shawlands received the trophy from Katherine Brunt, England strike bowler and a member of the Ashes-winning team this year, who is also from Barnsley and acts as an ambassador for the Drax Cup.

The schools took to the pitch prior to Yorkshire Vikings v Durham Jets in the NatWest T20 Blast.

For Driffield it was the third year of missing out on the trophy, having finished third last year and runners-up in 2012.

The Drax Cup is the biggest under 9s cricket competition in the UK and is open to schools from across Yorkshire and Teesside.

Teams play in a series of events to produce four area winners from the North, South, East and West. These four teams then play the 2014 Drax Cup Finals at Headingley Cricket Ground.

The competition is sponsored by Drax and organised by The Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with Yorkshire Cricket Board, Yorkshire Schools’ Cricket Association and The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation.

The sponsorship by Drax is part of the company’s Cricket In The Community scheme which also provides cricket coaching to schools.
