Driffield Red Lion’s opponents for this Division Two League game on a warm afternoon were Driffield J.F.C. 3rds .
This game was a tester for both teams as they meet again in a few weeks time in the Division Two Cup semi final.
Lion applied the early pressure with Nicko driving a shot in from the left but it was cleared by a defender who headed away for a corner. And it was Nicko again with another hard drive but there was no one in front of goal to convert.
FC started to settle a bit and their no. 9 had hard luck seeing his shot go just over the bar.
Both teams had further chances but failed to find the net. Parker came closest with a bullet header from a Rivard corner but just went over the bar.
At half time it was 0-0 and manager Fletcher urged his players to start playing the sort of football they are capable of and this seemed to work as they looked a different side from the whistle.
Atkins was replaced by Dom Braim after 10 minutes, and shortly after Kellington finally opened the scoring with a pinpoint header from a great Pinder throw in.
It was Kellington again on 18 minutes who made it 2-0 with a fierce shot which the goalie found too hot to handle and the ball slipped through his legs into the net.
Rivard and Nicko had several attempts to get on the score sheet but it was not their day and it was that man Kellington who put Lion further ahead with another fine header from a Nicko cross to complete his hat-trick.
Manager Fletcher felt confident enough to make two further substitutions, replacing Iggy and Kell with Gladstone and Musgrove and at the final whistle it was 3-0 to Lion which was a fair result on the day.
Thanks to referee Murray for controlling the game and he awarded Kellington man of the match.
Thanks also to sponsors Motif 8 Design Ltd and Lee and Jo for refreshments.
Lion now need to keep the momentum going with games against Mermaid and Driffield Star before the semi final in mid April.
