All-round athletics star Shaun Kerry, 14, has hit the number one ranking in the UK, for the second time in a matter of weeks.

Driffield School pupil Kerry, who competes for Kingston Upon Hull AC, hit the top spot in the UK under-15s shot putt rankings list, but he threw a PB of 58.51 metres in his preferred hammer discipline at Darlington to bag top spot in the UK rankings in that category too.

His mum Andrea Robson said: “Shaun trains three times a week at Costello in Hull as well as doing lots of other sporting activities and training at the gym.

“He enjoys throws and sprints. It’s hammer throwing he really wanted to excel at as it’s his favourite of the throws - and probably most technical.

"After training hard and regularly throwing over 55m in training, he was finally rewarded for his hard work when he threw a massive PB at Darlington in a YDL match, making him number one in the UK."

The teenager has qualified nationally in shot, javelin, hammer and 100m for the English Schools Athletic event but he can only compete in one discipline and has opted for the hammer.

Robson added: “So far he’s had a fantastic season taking first place in every event he’s competed in apart from one 100m race, where he had to settle for second place, but was happy as he got a PB of 11.8 seconds, losing out to an Australian sprinter.

“Driffield School are very supportive of his interest in athletics and he has participated in a number of school athletics events.”
