COUNCIl allotment rents in Driffield are among the cheapest and best value in East Yorkshire.

The town council has recently agreed that rent for full plots should rise from £15 to £20 a year, with the cost of half plots rising from £7.50 to £10.

The increase brings Driffield rents in line with allotments in other areas across the county.

The clerk, Mrs Claire Binnington, told the town council that despite the rise they were still among the cheapest in the region. Currently, rents in Molescroft are £17 a year, with Brandesburton £25, Market Weighton £30, Cottingham £20, Withernsea £27.50 and Flamborough £30.

But Mrs Binnington said all the clerks she had spoken to said they were also reviewing rents for the coming financial year.

Driffield town council subsidises its allotments.

Figures show that in 2009 expenditure was £1,849 compared with income of £1,662, in 2010 expenditure was £956 compared with income of £1,680 and in 2011 expenditure was £2,291 compared with income of £1,407.

Expenditure includes the cost of rat boxes and poison, padlocks, security chains, fencing and posts, competition prizes, engraving, skips, asbestos removal, weed killer, repairs to equipment and water.

The expenditure does not include any calculation for time spent by office staff administering the running of the allotments, which includes letter writing, inspections, receipt and banking, liaising with the police and allotments holders and resolving disagreements.

Neither does expenditure take into account the six or seven hours spent by the Tidy Team grass cutting, building fences, road hole filling.
