Public health experts in East Yorkshire are urging parents to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated against measles.

The move comes as cases of the disease reported across England and Wales continue to be at the highest levels seen since 2004.

In line with trends across the country, the number of cases of measles is rising in North Yorkshire and the Humber, including the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Since the beginning of January 2013, 80 suspected cases of measles have been reported across North Yorkshire and the Humber area (28 of which have been laboratory confirmed). By comparison, 29 suspected cases of the disease were reported in the same area between January and March the previous year, 2012 (none of which were laboratory confirmed).

Public health experts are urging parents to ensure their children have received two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.
