The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has announced that its highly popular New Years Day Duck Race has been cancelled.
The event was due be held in Driffield Beck as it passes Eastgate Car Park, Great Driffield on Sunday January 1 with the first race being run at 2pm.
The event was to have consisted of three races involving up to 450 individually numbered plastic ducks followed by a 15 duck final. However the state of the beck has led the organisers to cancel the race.
David Woodmansey, race organiser, said: “The Duck Race has now become an important part of New Years Day in Driffield and we are deeply disappointed to have had to cancel again this year. However, the stretch of beck at the Eastgate Car Park is suffering from extremely low flow again this winter.
“There have been times in recent weeks when the back has been bone dry, at others there have been only a few, isolated, stagnant pools. Back in June there was only just enough water flowing to allow us to run our summer races. However, with no flow at all at the moment would be impossible to go ahead with the event this year. I have looked at other, publicly accessible, stretches of the beck but without success.”
